Customer Water Service Requirements:South Carolina plumbing code requires a shut off valve be installed on each water service line just after your water meter box. This valve allows the customer to turn off their water whenever they need to for emergencies, maintenance or for any reason like being away from home on vacation etc.… Water Department personnel are not always available quickly in an emergency and we definitely cannot respond as quickly as the homeowner. Town ordinance requires this valve be installed and actually allows for a service charge to the customer if the customer requires us to turn off their water for these common needs. We highly encourage you to have a shut off valve installed on your water service if you don’t already have one and maintain its accessibility. You may not need it often but when you do, you’ll want to be able to turn it off quickly. You do not want to be trying to find a valve in the yard when water is running on your floors in the house.
Customer Sewer Service Requirements:South Carolina plumbing code requires a clean-out port be installed at the street property line for each sewer service. This clean-out port allows us to inspect the sewer service line in the event of a sewer backup to determine responsibility for clearing the blockage. If this street clean-out is holding water the problem is in the Town’s lines and we must correct it. If this clean-out is dry then the problem is in the customer’s sewer lines and they must have the blockage cleared at their expense. If no property line clean-out is installed we can only inspect the sewer mains in the street. If they are not backed up, the customer must have a clean-out installed at that time before the Town can take any additional actions to correct the problem. This port is important when needed. Keep these clean-out port visible and accessible. You do not want to be looking for a plastic clean-out cap in the grass if there is sewer spilling on your floors.
